A copper-chromium-nickel alloy steel with improved resistance to atmospheric corrosion is ASTM A242 Corten Steel. Carbon (≤0.15%), manganese (0.25–0.50%), phosphorus (≤0.04%), sulphur (≤0.05%), silicon (0.25–0.75%), copper (0.20–0.60%), chromium (0.30–1.25%), and nickel (≤0.65%) are the usual constituents. Depending on thickness, it has a tensile strength of 480–630 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 345 MPa. After being exposed to weather, this alloy takes on a stable, rust-like appearance that shields the material underneath. It can be used outdoors for extended periods of time without the need for coating or painting because of its mechanical strength and resistance to corrosion.
