About 22% chromium, 5–6.5% nickel, 3–3.5% molybdenum, and trace amounts of manganese, carbon, and nitrogen are present in Duplex Steel 2205, a nitrogen-enhanced duplex stainless steel. Excellent mechanical strength and superior resistance to corrosion, including pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, are conferred by this special dual-phase (austenitic-ferritic) structure. The alloy has a 450 MPa yield strength, a 620–860 MPa tensile strength, and a 25–30% elongation. Because of this, 2205 plates are ideal for uses requiring both high strength and resistance to corrosion, even in environments that are acidic and rich in chloride.
