Medium carbon steel with a typical composition of carbon (0.35–0.45%), manganese (0.60–1.00%), and trace amounts of silicon, sulphur, and phosphorous is used to make EN8 sheets and plates. EN8 provides good machinability, reasonable ductility, and a good tensile strength (usually between 550 and 700 MPa). For better mechanical qualities, such as increased wear resistance and surface hardness, it can be heated. Depending on the heat treatment, EN8’s Brinell Hardness can vary from 170 to 240 HB. Because of these mechanical properties, EN8 is appropriate for parts that need to be strong, dependable, and able to withstand moderate amounts of stress.
