High-strength, low-alloy steel SA537 Class 2 was created especially for use in boilers and pressure vessels. Carbon (0.17–0.24%), manganese (0.60–1.35%), silicon (0.15–0.50%), and trace elements like copper, sulfur, and phosphorus make up its chemical composition. Heat treatment is applied to the steel to increase its toughness and resistance to stress. It has a tensile strength of 485–620 MPa (70–90 ksi) and a yield strength of 275 MPa (40 ksi). It functions dependably under extreme pressure and temperature conditions and has outstanding notch toughness, weldability, and resistance to heat and corrosion.

Tempering : Notch toughness can be improved by quenched cooling from hot rolling or normalizing by the supplier. If such a faster cooling rate is agreed upon between purchaser and supplier then the steel is also to be tempered at 1200 F.
