The super-austenitic stainless steel used to make SMO 254 Foils (UNS S31254) provides exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking caused by chloride. The alloy’s strength and resistance to corrosion are increased by the presence of about 20% chromium, 18% nickel, 6% molybdenum, and nitrogen. These foils have a Brinell hardness of 200–250 HB, a tensile strength of 650–850 MPa, a yield strength of 290 MPa, and an elongation of 40%. SMO 254 foils are perfect for use in saltwater and aggressive chemical environments because of this combination of qualities.
