The chemical composition of UNS S31254 (SMO 254), a highly alloyed austenitic stainless steel, is 20–22% chromium, 18–20% nickel, 6–8% molybdenum, and additional nitrogen for increased strength. Carbon, silicon, and manganese are also present in trace amounts. Excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion cracking is provided by this alloy. Along with excellent thermal stability, SMO 254 has a yield strength of 290 MPa (42 ksi) and a tensile strength of roughly 650 MPa (94 ksi). Because of these characteristics, it is perfect for industrial applications involving high temperatures and high corrosion.
