The austenitic chromium-nickel alloy known as stainless steel 301 has a maximum carbon content of 0.15%, 16–18% chromium, and 6–8% nickel. Because of its composition, the alloy can achieve good ductility and high tensile strength (up to 930 MPa when cold worked). Excellent formability, work hardening, and moderate corrosion resistance are characteristics of SS 301 angles. In the annealed state, they are non-magnetic, but cold working makes them more magnetic. The alloy is appropriate for high-strength, lightweight structural components because it retains good weldability and oxidation resistance.
