18–20% chromium and 8–10.5% nickel make up the austenitic alloy known as stainless steel 304. It provides a good mix of formability, strength, and resistance to corrosion. SS 304 has an elongation of 40%, a yield strength of about 215 MPa, and a tensile strength between 500 and 750 MPa. Its exceptional weldability and resistance to intergranular corrosion are made possible by its maximum carbon content of 0.08%. Because SS 304 retains its mechanical qualities under a variety of conditions and temperatures, it can be used for both routine and complex fabrication tasks.
