A low-carbon version of stainless steel 304, stainless steel 304L has a maximum carbon content of 0.03% and is made up of 18–20% chromium and 8–12% nickel. Because there is less chance of carbide precipitation during welding due to the lower carbon content, welded structures are more resistant to corrosion. With exceptional ductility and toughness, SS 304L angles have a tensile strength of 485–620 MPa and a yield strength of 170–240 MPa. The alloy is appropriate for both structural and corrosive service environments because it is highly weldable, non-magnetic when annealed, and retains its mechanical integrity over a broad temperature range.
