About 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum are present in stainless steel 316. Its resistance to corrosion is enhanced by the addition of molybdenum, particularly against industrial solvents and chlorides. Its yield strength is 205 MPa, and its tensile strength is 515 MPa. The alloy has outstanding toughness, weldability, and formability. In addition to having good oxidation resistance, SS 316 works well at both high and low temperatures. It is perfect for chemical and marine applications because it is non-magnetic when annealed and offers superior pitting resistance to SS 304.
