With a maximum of 0.03% carbon, 10–14% nickel, 2–3% molybdenum, and roughly 16–18% chromium, stainless steel 316L is extremely resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion. Sensitisation during welding is reduced by the low carbon content. Even at below-freezing temperatures, it provides outstanding ductility and toughness along with a tensile strength of 485 MPa and a yield strength of 170 MPa. When annealed, SS 316L is non-magnetic and has excellent weldability. It is a popular option in harsh environments because of its strength and resistance to corrosion.
