An austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy, stainless steel 317L foil has a low carbon content (maximum 0.03%), roughly 18–20% chromium, 11–15% nickel, and 3–4% molybdenum. In environments that are acidic and chloride-rich, this composition improves resistance to pitting and chemical attack. The alloy has good ductility and formability, a yield strength of 205 MPa, and a tensile strength of about 515 MPa. It provides outstanding weldability and corrosion resistance, particularly in settings where intergranular corrosion is an issue, and it retains mechanical integrity at high temperatures.
