Chromium (10.5–11.75%) and low carbon (≤0.08%) make up the majority of Stainless Steel 409, a ferritic stainless steel. Tiny amounts of titanium and other stabilising elements are added to enhance corrosion resistance and weldability. It has good formability and a moderate mechanical strength, with a tensile strength between 380 and 550 MPa. Additionally, at high temperatures, SS 409 provides outstanding resistance to exhaust gas oxidation and corrosion. It is ideal for structural and automotive applications requiring strength and moderate corrosion resistance because of its stable ferritic structure, which permits good dimensional stability and thermal conductivity.
