SS 440C is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel containing approximately 16–18% chromium, 0.95–1.20% carbon, and trace amounts of manganese, silicon, and molybdenum. It offers high hardness (up to 60 HRC) after heat treatment and excellent wear and abrasion resistance. Its tensile strength ranges from 760 to 1900 MPa, and it has moderate corrosion resistance in hardened condition. Though less corrosion-resistant than austenitic grades, SS 440C provides superior strength and edge retention, making it suitable for cutting tools, bearings, dies, and other high-stress mechanical parts.
