SS 446 is a high-chromium ferritic stainless steel with 23–27% chromium, low carbon content (≤ 0.2%), and minor additions of molybdenum, silicon, and manganese. It offers excellent oxidation resistance up to 1100°C (2012°F) and good resistance to sulfurous atmospheres. Though not hardenable by heat treatment, it has a tensile strength of ~485 MPa and yield strength of ~275 MPa. SS 446 is magnetic in all conditions, has moderate formability, and is most effective in high-temperature, mildly corrosive environments, especially where thermal cycling and scaling resistance are essential.
