Iron, 23–27% chromium, and trace amounts of silicon and molybdenum make up the majority of stainless steel 446, a ferritic alloy. It is especially made to withstand high temperatures up to 1100°C with exceptional resistance to oxidation, sulfidation, and scaling. Mechanical characteristics include good creep resistance and a tensile strength of about 485 MPa. 446 is very stable in thermal cycling conditions, despite having a moderate level of toughness. Usually hot-rolled and annealed, the sheets and plates offer good corrosion resistance and dimensional stability in oxidising environments, particularly in industrial heat applications.
